And, who would have thought that it would be second-hand clothing that got them there! Vinted, the online platform for second-hand clothes is officially Lithuania’s first tech startup to achieve a valuation of over $1 billion. The company reports making transactions of over $1.3 billion on their online store and their latest round of funding came in at around 128 million euros.
Vinted was founded back in 2008 by Milda Mitikute and Justas Janauskas in Vilnius, Lithuania. Originally started as a place for women to trade the clothes online from their current closets. After this, the company soon expanded to Germany and eventually to across 10 different countries in Europe and the United States. In addition, the business expanded to include men’s apparel and accessories. By 2012, Vinted launched its mobile app, which increased traffic on their website. This company is one of the world’s leading second-hand shopping sites at the moment and is showing the world that pre-loved items can actually become mainstream.
While Vinted is very much a for-profit business, more world-renowned designers and icons like VOUGE’s Anna Wintour are encouraging women to purchase higher quality pieces that they can take care of over a period of time and then hand them on to someone else. After all, every designer would like their work to last forever and selling your clothing is a great way to retain some value out of classic pieces.
