With a goal to have 50% of their garments made with sustainable fabrics by 2022, the Spanish fashion company Mango is making strides in the right direction. Just in April, Mango unveiled the third edition of its “Committed” collection, which is part of the brand’s “Take Action” program. The first two collections were launched in February and October of 2017 with great response from customers. The “Take Action” initiative is part of the company’s bigger plan to incorporate sustainability into their business model for good. In addition to committing to using sustainable materials, the brand has also created a sustainable store concept called “The Line” that tries to consume fewer resources while the store is shut.
Other well-known international fast fashion brands like H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 have also taken steps to change their business models to include sustainable initiatives, but Mango is definitely going a few steps further and bringing some innovation to the way they go sustainable.
Mango is also monitoring things like chemicals in the water that could potentially get passed on through garments to the consumer and finding ways to reduce CO2 emissions in their manufacturing and production processes. Back in 2015, Mango also started a pilot project in Barcelona called “Second Chance”, where the retail outlets accepted donations of old clothes and shoes to be recycled. Seams For Dreams especially loves this effort by Mango, as this is something we don’t see often at big retail stores. Reusing and recycling is a great way to reduce the world’s textile waste and a great idea for other companies to follow suit.
Sustainability doesn’t only come in the form of using sustainable fabrics, as Mango has shown us with their various programs. Sustainability needs to be seen from all angles to make a true difference and we hope that more companies take a more holistic approach to incorporating this into their business models.
