Designers everywhere have pivoted their businesses and workshops to cater to the need of the hour. COVID-19 has affected the fashion world heavily and many artisans and designers are struggling to keep things going due to the lockdown. With manufacturers and workshops shut down globally, designers have turned their businesses on to fill a necessity as opposed to a luxury. Face masks are needed everywhere, especially for our healthcare workers who are on the front line of fighting the coronavirus. In India, we’ve seen Indian designers stepping up for the cause, including Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Anita Dongre, who have both donated generously towards the PM’s National Relief Fund, along with other Bollywood stars including Akshay Kumar and Shahrukh Khan, amongst many others.
Here are other designers around the world who are also doing their part:
- Christian Siriano
Siriano stopped all production of clothing in his workshops and had his team create 1,000 face masks for health workers in New York City, where his label is based. Siriano is also collecting donations for his team, who will be responsible for making the materials and delivering the masks to the hospitals. Click here for more information.
- Michael Costello
This American designer has made a pledge to donate 1 million face masks to health workers around the world. So far, Costello has donated to over 500 hospitals around the world. We just love the cool designs, check them out here to donate and help the cause.
- LVMH Moet Hennessey – Louis Vuitton
This French multinational declared earlier this week that it would be using it’s Chinese distributors to obtain 40 million medical masks to give to French health workers.
- Prada
Italy has been hit hard with the pandemic and Prada announced that it would be producing 80,000 overalls and over 100,000 masks in it’s Umbria factory. All of the supplies will be distributed to health workers in the Tuscany region of Italy.
- Kering
The conglomerate behind brands like YSL and Balenciaga have also announced that they will be importing 3 million face masks from Chinese suppliers.
The list can go on. This pandemic has forced the entire fashion industry to rethink their businesses and manufacturing methods and has caused a major change.
