For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term “upcycling”, it basically means that you make something new out of something old, or gently used. Upcycling is a great way to help our planet and significantly reduces the amount of waste in our landfills. At Seams for Dreams, we hope to inspire you to start some of your own upcycling projects. Here are some of our favourite ways to upcycle with stuff you have laying around the house!
- Bunting Flags
Bunting flags are a popular way to turn various fabrics into lovely home décor. Simply take one long, thin piece of fabric on which you can sew various flags made from all the different t-shirts you have. You can even find a bunting template that you can print online!
- Garment Bags
Put a slit through the stitched side of a pillow case and watch them turn into garment bags!
- Denim Bracelets
Take bits of your old denim and wrap them around thin bangles that you can find at arts and crafts stores, or the local market! These trendy bracelets are bound to impress.
- Wine Bottle Vases
Use your old wine bottles as vases for your flowers. To make these even cooler, use pages from an old fashion magazine to add some pizzazz to your new vase.
- T-shirt Bags
Use old t-shirts and turn them into a nice tote bag that you can carry while shopping or to the gym.
- Denim Baskets
Create baskets out of the legs of your old jeans for useful and decorative purposes. These look nicer than plastic baskets and are wonderful for storage of small items.
- Newspaper Flowers
Make cool décor for your home by making a bouquet of flowers out of old newspapers. With the number of newspapers we tend to waste, making flowers is a fun way to make sure the newspapers get some love.
