Smriti Irani, the Union Minister for Textiles announced at Lakme Fashion Week that she is launching Project SU.RE, which stands for sustainable resolution, a collaboration between 16 of the largest retail fashion brands. Irani birthed this concept from the principles of Mahatma Gandhi who encouraged responsible business practices that would have a positive impact on the environment.
The conglomerate of 16 brands that will be included in this project have a total industry value of 30,000 crores, so this partnership really has the potential to help save our planet. At Lakme Fasihon Week, Irani spoke about the project stating, “Everything we consume, we have to consume responsibly. The step taken today makes for not only responsible business but also smart business,” a direct reference to Gandhi’s vision for India.
So, what is Project SU.RE?
Although the details are still vague, this project aims to create sustainable protocols for the fashion industry. Other agencies involved in the project are the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India, the United Nations in India, and IMG Reliance, all of whom put together Lakme Fashion Week. Some of the brands involved in the project are Future Group, Westside, Spykar, Levis, Raymond, and Shoppers Stop, just to name a few. By 2025, the brands commit to ensuring that a large percentage of their consumption will only be from sustainable materials.
This is surely a large undertaking by the government of India and Seams For Dreams is thrilled to know so many large retailers are taking part in joining the sustainable fashion movement. These big-name brands will pave the path for all future designers and brands in India and it’s fantastic to see how sustainability is truly at the top of the list.
