Models wearing dresses made from vintage fabrics from the upcycled collection of Seams for Dreams.
A coat all made from sheets of tents all sewn together. A jacket created from scraps of old denim fabric. And have you ever heard of swants? There are so many fashion pieces being created through upcycling and we went scouring around for the most interesting finds that will surely give you an idea on how to upcycle from just looking around your house and closet. Here are some interesting articles of clothing that we found:
TENT RAINCOAT
Have you ever gone to a music festival and saw all those tents littered all over without anyone picking them up? The company Withintent has devised a clever way to use the sheets of tent and upcycle them into functional and stylish rain coats. Based in the UK, Withintent has their online shop where you can get an original raincoat for yourself and have the history behind it too. Like this blue and red raincoat called Cape Red With Blue, it was made from the sheets of tents that were found in the Glastonbury Festival in 2010.
DENIM JACKETS
It is a point in every fashionista’s closet to have at least one black dress, one (or several) white shirt and one denim jacket. These are fashion staples of course that you can wear easily daily or in a rush when you want to get something out of your wardrobe to put on quickly. We discovered London- based designer Elina Priha and her collection of cool denim jackets that would get you to think twice about upcycling as it’s all made from scraps of vintage denim jeans. And with Priha’s fine mix of denim fabrics incorporated in her jackets, we are motivated to update our fashion wardrobes and get one of them to wear over a crisp white shirt or a little black robe.
SWANTS
We know what jeggings are – which is a cross between leggings and jeans and we wear them all the time, but what are swants? It is in itself, also a play of words like jeggings, and it combines sweaters and pants. Can you image how it looks like? It is one of the brilliant original creations of Stephen West, founder of the fashion brand Westknits, made of old wool sweaters that no one really bothers to wear again after the Christmas holidays. Swants totally adopts upcycling with the re-usage of old wool sweaters turned into pants. We think that this fashion piece is such a genius idea and if you have your fashionista friends holed up during winter in Paris or New York this Christmas, why not suggest them to wear swants!
